The VOSS Foundation

Clean water is an absolute necessary for all living things, yet clean drinking water is often taken for granted. Did you know that approximately 760 million people around the world do not have access to clean water? And more than 840,000 people die each year from water related diseases? In some nations, women and children are expected to walk miles in order to access the closest water supply.

Unfortunately clean drinking water is a scarce resource. Only one percent out of the three percent of fresh drinking water is available for humans to use directly. United Nations has predicted that due to this, in the future, wars will be fought over fresh water, similar to the current situation in the oil industry today. In this same study conducted by the United Nations, it is estimated that by the year 2025, around 30 nations will be experiencing a very serious water shortage problem. 18 out of these 30 nations are predicted to be from the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. These include countries like Yemen, Somalia and Egypt.

“Water scarcity is an issue exacerbated by demographic pressures, climate change and pollution,” says Ignacio Saiz, the director of Centre for Economic and Social Rights, a social justice group.

Ideally, it should be a given that every human being across the world has easy access to clean drinking water. It is disappointing to admit that there are many large global corporations however that have claimed access to this resource and bottlethe water sell it to consumers for a profit. This poses as a negative effect on many individuals that live below the poverty line who are not only denied access to this resource but are unable to afford clean bottled water. Hence this has resulted to the death of millions from thirst.

With that being said there are many conscious global corporations and bodies that have worked together to try and resolve the global water crisis. Many of us do have a access to clean drinking water. We also have the option to choose to drink water from brands that value human life and this precious resource.

Among such brands isVOSS water, which has acknowledged the global water crisis and has decided to make a difference instead of exploiting the current situation. Voss has set up the VOSS Foundation, a non-profit organization whose main goal is to provide the community in Sub-Saharan Africa access to clean water, sanitation and hygiene while raising awareness of the ongoing need for clean drinking water in the region.

The foundation was founded in 2008 by Knut Brundtland, then CEO of VOSS Norway after a trip to the African region where he experiences the magnitude of the global water crisis. He felt responsible for what was happening and knew he could make a difference and raise awareness with what was happening. With the support his colleagues, the VOSS Foundation was incorporated in New York as an independent public charity with a commitment to excellence.

VOSS Water now runs projects across the Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, Kenya, Mali, Liberia, Swaziland and Uganda.  With the help of visionaries and partners across the globe, this foundation is now able to provide many of these African regions with access to clean water as well as continuously work towards raising awareness of this crisis in the region.

“At Voss Foundation, we view access to clean water and hygiene as an engine for growth,” explains Kara Gerson, the Executive Director of Voss Foundation. “By following up with our partners for years after implementation, we have been able to see the ripple effect of our efforts and the impact on all areas, especially women’s empowerment. While an entire community benefits from our work, it is women and children who see the biggest change because, traditionally, water has been considered a women’s responsibility. When we are able to facilitate access, women and girls save hours of backbreaking water carrying during which they were vulnerable to attack. That new-found time and security, coupled with hours gained back from no longer having to care for family members stricken by water-borne illnesses, more healthy days themselves, allows women and girls to pursue their own education and income-generating activities.”

VOSS Water is artesian water from Norway. Bottled in the pollution free springs in the South of Norway, the water has a clean distinct taste and is low in mineral content. VOSS is known to be one of the purest bottled water available. VOSS Water is available to consumers in Still and Sparkling in a variety of sizes. The signature bottles are available in recyclable glass bottles as well as in high grade PET bottles.

An appealing feature of the VOSS Water bottles is the availability of glass and PET bottles. Many of the water being sold in the market is only available in plastic bottles, a large percentage of these plastic bottles contain a chemical called Bisphenol A or BPA which a synthetic chemical that is an impersonator of estrogen and has a toxic effect on humans. Another chemical present in many plastic bottles is Phthalates. This chemical is often lined to many reproductive and developmental complications among humans.
